The Freshie Almanac presents
Route 109
One imagined highway. 109 mile markers. Every scent a stop.
Route 109 is not on any map. We surveyed it ourselves, one scent at a time.
All 109 miles surveyed
We pour 109 scents, so we drew one highway with 109 mile markers and gave every scent a place to live. The road runs the way a good day does: washday air across the First Light Flats, fruit stands through Orchard Valley, sugar smoke on the Fairground Stretch, pine up through High Timber, the light going long over Big Dusk Country, and at last Porch Light Basin, where every window is amber and the road runs out at the holidays.
Every marker is a two minute stop, not a review. We tell you what the air does out there, who tends to ride with it, and what to pair it with at the next exit. No lab talk and no note pyramids; the scent stories cover that. This is the drive itself.
The survey crew hung the last sign and went home. All 109 miles are open, no roadblocks, no construction season. Start at Mile 1. The flats are lovely this early.

Off the highway
The Detours
Eight gravel turnoffs off Route 109. The highway is for freshies. The detours are for home.
The survey crew kept finding roads that were not miles. A spur to a cookhouse, stairs up an overlook they had been pretending not to skip, a lane that dead-ends at a pie safe. None of them belong on the highway, because the highway is for scents that ride with you, and these turn off toward things that stay home: our candles. 8 detours are open. Take one on the way through.
- The Line House Laneoff Mile 6One lane past the dryers, somebody still trusts the weather.
- The Orchard House Driveoff Mile 30The tent is rented. The porch at the end of this drive is not.
- The Cabin Road Past the Groveoff Mile 71Somebody strings that grove every winter. This road ends at their porch light.
- The Cookhouse Spuroff Mile 78Half a mile of gravel that ends at a coffee pot with seniority.
- The Harness Loft Stairsoff Mile 80The saddler works downstairs. The good stuff ages upstairs.
- The Overlook Stairsoff Mile 86The correction the survey crew owed this road from the start.
- The Woodlot Gateoff Mile 93The fire that never goes out has a supply line. This is it.
- The Pie Safe Laneoff Mile 99The pie count is posted at the table. The pies are guarded here.
The roads are imagined. The candles are real, and none of them are poured yet. Reserve one and pay nothing today.
