Mile 47. Hansel & Gretel House

The House You Can Visit

Hansel & Gretel House: The House You Can Visit, a stop on Route 109

What the air does out here

Mile 47 holds the Stretch's only walk-through attraction, a cottage shingled in graham crackers. Warm spice sits in the walls, something sweet is piped along every seam, and a retired baker docents the place and re-pipes the mortar after rain. The old tale had exactly one flaw, and this house fixed it by being friendly.

Who rides with it

Kids who know how the story goes and keep one hand on the door frame anyway. Grandparents who read it aloud and always skipped a page. Anyone relieved to learn this oven bakes cookies and nothing else, and that the trail of crumbs leads in, which the old story would call progress.

Pair it at the next stop

The building material sells one marker back, where Frosted Gingerbread runs the first stall on bakery row at Mile 46. Rich Vanilla waits at Mile 53 if you want to meet the extract behind all this frosting. Visit in any order; the house is not going anywhere.
