Route 109 / Leg 3: THE FAIRGROUND STRETCH

Mile 43. Blueberry Pumpkin Patch

The Patch Behind the Midway

Blueberry Pumpkin Patch: The Patch Behind the Midway, a stop on Route 109

What the air does out here

Behind the last row of game booths the fairground keeps its own ground, the one mile on the Stretch that grows instead of bakes. Prize pumpkins sit staked out for the year-round weigh-off, blueberry rows fruit along the back fence out of season and unbothered about it, and the breeze runs blueberries over ripe pumpkin. The record board on the fence post has decades on it.

Who rides with it

Growers who discuss tonnage in whispers. Kids assigned to guard a pumpkin and taking it seriously. The weigh-off scale is certified. The record is disputed. The disputants are cousins.

Pair it at the next stop

This is the first pumpkin on Route 109, and the fall shelf quietly starts assembling here. The bog back at Mile 17 bet on October early, where Cranberry Woods holds the turnout; the patch takes the same bet with better snacks. Stage one now and rotate it in at the first frost, glovebox rules. The full spice arrives at Pumpkin Spice, Mile 52.
