What the air does out here
The second switchback swings onto the mountain's south face at Mile 62, and the pines step back like they were asked politely. Pale rock, full sun, green cactus growing out of the seams with white blooms open along a low stone wall some road crew stacked generations ago. Drivers pull in expecting a view and get a whole different climate. The mountain runs two weathers, shade for the pine and sun for the cactus, and the road trades between them all the way up.
Who rides with it
Sunglasses people. Wall sitters warming their hands on the stones. Drivers who thought they knew what a mountain smells like. The pine and the cactus have split this mountain for a thousand years and have yet to exchange a word.
Pair it at the next stop
The desert keeps a softer hour two markers up at Cactus Flower and Aloe, Mile 64, and fruits at the last sun ledge, Prickly Pear at Mile 69. Ride the sun while it holds. The next shoulder belongs to the pines.
