The First Switchback

Aspen Woods: The First Switchback, a stop on Route 109

What the air does out here

The road tips uphill at Mile 61, and the first pines have been waiting. The last string light drops into the mirror, the first switchback arrives inside the mile, aspens flicker silver between the pines, and the air loses ten degrees and gains an edge nobody cooked, poured, or sold. Crisp mountain air with a run of cool cedar, after twenty two miles of a midway that sold you everything. The mountain opens by giving the air away.

Who rides with it

Drivers with the paper-wrapped loaf from Mile 60 still riding the passenger seat. Anyone who takes the first switchback slower than the sign requires. High Timber charges nothing for the air, and every driver rolls a window down like they are getting away with something.

Pair it at the next stop

The loaf came from the last stall on bakery row, Vanilla Pound Cake at Mile 60, and eats best at a pullout with the engine ticking. Two switchbacks up, the timber gets a front desk at Balsam and Cedar, Mile 63.
