What the air does out here
The dance lets out at Mile 88, and the night is not done. Truck windows come down on the ranch road, hats traded two songs ago stay traded, and the air off the punch bowl follows the trucks out, strawberries and coconut over a polite splash of rum somebody signed for. The stars are out. A chorus starts up from the truck bed on the second verse.
Who rides with it
The designated driver, having the best night of anyone. The friend holding both hats and a third nobody claims. Whoever starts the singing. Three riders, one chorus, no agreement on the words, and no motion to reach one.
Pair it at the next stop
The whole night starts back down the road at Leather & Lace, Mile 82, and every telling agrees on that much. The strawberries came off the patch one marker back at Strawberry Leather, Mile 87, and the ride home is fully remembered, all three versions of it.
