Mile 66. Jake

Jake's Trailhead

Jake: Jake's Trailhead, a stop on Route 109

What the air does out here

The trailhead at Mile 66 has an official name on the forest map, and nobody has ever used it. This is Jake's. He runs the trail crew, sets stone steps that outlast marriages, and takes his ten o'clock break on the tailgate, peeling an orange over fresh shavings, citrus over sawn wood the whole mountain expects by now. As far as anyone can establish, the mountain came with him.

Who rides with it

The crew, who arrive early because he does. Hikers who sign the register just to be counted. Anyone who waves at the tailgate and receives the nod. Nobody remembers hiring Jake, and nobody with any sense has gone looking for the paperwork.

Pair it at the next stop

His crew mows the only lawn on the mountain one marker back, Fresh Cut Grass at Mile 65. And the tailgate ritual keeps a dressed-up cousin down in Big Dusk Country, spice and a barber's chair at Bay Rum, Mile 73.
