Off Mile 86: The Overlook the Survey Crew Skipped

The Overlook Stairs

The correction the survey crew owed this road from the start.

Desert Dusk: The Overlook Stairs, a detour off Route 109

Why the road turns off here

Mile 86 is the overlook the survey crew skipped, and the crew has heard about it at every supper since. So here is the correction, on foot. The highway is for scents that ride with you. This one asks you to stop the truck and stand still, which is a different product entirely. We mean that literally. It is a candle.

What the air does on the way in

The stairs cut up through sagebrush that has been rehearsing all day for exactly this hour. Dry amber on the warm rocks, cool air sliding in from the flats below, and the whole desert going purple at the edges like it knows it is being looked at.

What waits at the end

At the top there is a rail, a bench, and a tin that holds the entire view: sagebrush, dry amber, cool desert air. We pour it as Desert Dusk. It is not ready yet and we will not pretend otherwise. Put your name on one, pay nothing today, and we will save you the bench.
